The challenge

Lusail Plaza Towers has four mixed-use towers (residential, commercial and retail) on the Arabian Gulf coast at the eastern end of Lusail's Commercial Boulevard District. It also has 14 low-rise commercial buildings and six storeys of underground parking. The floors had to be of top quality, with a custom design and a high standard of finish.

The DCP solution

DCP supplied Strongcoat Terrazzo, a solvent-free, seamless decorative flooring system. It uses a durable, pigmented epoxy resin mixed with synthetic or natural aggregates to make an epoxy terrazzo. It gives a smooth finish with low maintenance and lower lifecycle cost. Under the terrazzo, the substrate was primed with Strongcoat UN101, dressed with anti-slip aggregate and reinforced with fibreglass mesh. Gripdeck Flexcoat 100 was applied over the mesh as a crack isolation and waterproofing membrane.

How it was applied

  1. Clean and repair the substrate, then prime with Strongcoat UN101.
  2. While the primer is wet, dress with Antislip Aggregate and embed a fibreglass reinforcement mesh.
  3. Apply Gripdeck Flexcoat 100 over the mesh as the crack isolation and waterproofing membrane.
  4. Mix the resin with the aggregates, lay the Strongcoat Terrazzo mortar and compact it to thickness.
  5. After 24 hours, dry grind in a slow circular motion to level and expose the aggregate.
  6. Apply a grout coat of Strongcoat Terrazzo neat resin to fill pinholes and voids, then wet grind and polish to a gloss.

The result

The system gave a durable, chemical-resistant floor with the required appearance, and the client gave positive feedback.
